Why rat poison does not provide a permanent rat control solution

Rat poison is intended to kill rats, but removing individual rats does not address the underlying issue — how they are gaining access to a property in the first place. Most modern rat poison products work slowly and usually require rats to feed several times before they become effective. However, rats are naturally cautious and selective feeders, and many populations have developed increasing resistance to commonly used poisons. Because of this, rat poison is often avoided by rats, only partially effective, or produces a short-term reduction while the wider infestation continues. As long as those access points remain, new rats will simply replace those that have been poisoned.
