Rat Poison
Why rat poison does not provide a permanent rat control solution
Rat poison is intended to kill rats, but removing individual rats does not address the underlying issue — how they are gaining access to a property in the first place. Most modern rat poison products work slowly and usually require rats to feed several times before they become effective. However, rats are naturally cautious and selective feeders, and many populations have developed increasing resistance to commonly used poisons. Because of this, rat poison is often avoided by rats, only partially effective, or produces a short-term reduction while the wider infestation continues. Even when poison appears to work, it targets the symptoms rather than the cause, meaning rats can quickly return.
Successful rat control is achieved through prevention rather than relying on poison. Rats infest buildings because defects in the structure allow them access to shelter, warmth and nearby food sources. As long as those access points remain, new rats will simply replace those that have been poisoned. Rat poison can also create additional issues, such as rats dying inside walls, floors or roof spaces, leading to unpleasant odours and secondary pest problems. The only reliable solution is to identify how rats are entering the property and permanently seal those routes. This is the approach used by Pestology: no reliance on rat poison, traps or temporary treatments — just detailed investigation, professional rat proofing, and long-term solutions that keep properties permanently free from rats.
